About Me

I was born in 1966 in Coventry and from an early age it was clear that I would be an artist. As a very small boy I was encouraged by my parents to draw and for me it became a natural extension of playing. My formal art education took place at Coventry (Lanchester) Polytechnic and then Wolverhampton School of Art and Design. In 1988, I graduated with Honours in Fine Art and Printmaking.

In 2000 I finally took the plunge and became a professional painter after winning the Grand Final of the popular Channel 4 television series Watercolour Challenge, presented by Hannah Gordon ( right )

About my Work

The Grand Final at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire

Whilst I sometimes paint with oils, my preferred medium is watercolour. The kit is light and compact (bottom left), making it ideal for carrying on outdoor expeditions, and the versatility of the medium itself never ceases to surprise me.

For the most part, I paint 'en plein air', an adopted French term referring to the practice of painting outside, though I am equally happy painting interiors such as that of Lichfield Cathedral ( bottom right ). Wherever I happen to be working, I always feel a special bond with artists who have blazed the trail before me: Cotman, Bonington, Girtin, Sargent and Homer are just a few, whose work continues to inspire me with its common theme of strong draughtsmanship, clarity of tone, colour and original vision.
